Whats New in SketchUp 2017

Graphics Pipeline 2.0

What matters more than how fast, smoothly, and reliably SketchUp renders your models?

In this release, we've made major improvements to our graphics pipeline, allowing for performance improvements everywhere you see a .SKP. Now, SketchUp, 3D Warehouse, LayOut, my.SketchUp, and Trimble Connect all render models using the same under-the-hood algorithms—all tuned for buttery 3D orbiting

Improved Transparancy Control

Along with our graphics pipeline overhaul, we’ve made big improvements to transparency, which should now render faster and at higher quality too. SketchUp is also now much better at displaying multiple transparencies to provide a more realistic sense of depth across several see-through faces. And for good measure, we’ve added the ability to fine-tune the opacity level in X-ray mode.

Improved Control, Interaction & Functionality

We’re always sharpening our 'heuristics', the ins and outs that make SketchUp quick and precise.

  • High DPI Modeling
We’ve tuned snapping and inferencing for high definition monitors (like Apple’s Retina Display). Edge weights have also been smart-scaled. You can back away from your screen now...
  • Smart Offset
Our new Offset tool avoids overlapping and self-intersecting geometry. Clean offsets, every time you hit ‘F’ (even in LayOut!)
  • Perpendicular Face Inferencing
Have you mastered parallel inferencing? We’ve added a ‘Perpendicular to Face’ inference. Hover a face; SketchUp will helpfully snap to its perpendicular.
  • Righteous Rectangles
Our Rectangle tools now utilize the arrow-key axis-locking (just like Circle and Polygon tools). Psst... find square or Golden Section proportions; hold shift to lock that in too!

Colour Customisation

In SketchUp 2017, we’re introducing customisation for the colours that display SketchUp’s axes and inferencing. We hope people with any degree of colour blindness will tweak these important colour schemes to make SketchUp and LayOut work just right.

Persistent IDs

Now, when you make a change to your SketchUp model, any LayOut dimensions associated with the model update to reflect your edit. This is possible thanks to a new feature across the SketchUp platform called Persistent IDs. These are identifiers for geometry that help SketchUp (and its extensions) manipulate individual entities, like a specific edge or face. Basically, every sliver of your model just got smarter.

Extension Manager

A new utility, Extension Manager is a one-look view of your SketchUp extensions. From here, it’s easy to toggle on and off custom tools (or uninstall them entirely). Extension Manager also displays an extension’s Digital Signature, the indication it meets our standard for quality and security.

How SketchUp Pro Licensing works
Single-user licenses

For customers with a single-user license of SketchUp Pro, here are the high points.

  • If you've purchased anything from a SketchUp partner in the last year -- a new SketchUp Pro license or a renewal of your Maintenance & Support plan -- you should receive an email SketchUp Pro license shortly after launch.
  • If it's been more than a year since you've bought anything from SketchUp, you;ll need to enroll in or renew a maintenance & Support plan to upgrade your license for SketchUp Pro
  • SketchUp Pro licenses now allow you to use SketchUp Pro on either a Mac or a PC. Just like always, you can authorize your SketchUp Pro on up to two machines, but you can only operate that license on one machine at a time. New licenses will have a serial number that ends in an "R" to indicate Reprise. Sub-2017 licenses that are upgraded to will keep the OS-specific letter: W or m
  • SketchUp downloads now start with a 30 day trial of SketchUp Pro. Our trial period used to be 8 hours of active use; we're excited to give users more time to try out everything we have to offer
Network Licenses

For customers with a network license for SketchUp Pro, here are the high points.

  • License management now happens in the cloud! This is huge - no more creating a shared folder on a local server. There's a number of redundancy and backup systems in place so that customers shouldn't encounter an outage
  • No more LAN restrictions. Since the license exists in the cloud, it's ok if the computers that are using a license are on a WAN
  • SketchUp will need to have a constant connection to the Internet. However, customers can check out a license for offline use, which will take a license seat from the general pool.
SketchUp Pro Features

A smarter way to think about 3D modeling

SketchUp Pro is like a pencil with superpowers. Start by drawing lines and shapes. Push and pull surfaces to turn them into 3D forms. Stretch, copy, rotate and paint to make anything you like. More advanced? Start modeling from CAD and terrain data, photographs or even hand sketches. Build models with custom behaviors and attributes. SketchUp Pro is as simple and as powerful as you want it to be.

Turn your models into drawings with LayOut

At some point in every project, you need to produce a set of drawings that shows your model: plans, sections, elevations, perspectives. LayOut in SketchUp Pro lets you add model views to pages, choose drawing scales, adjust line weights and add dimensions, callouts and graphics. Changes to your model are reflected automatically in LayOut. When it's time, export PDFs, images and CAD files.

Get good, fast.

There's a reason SketchUp is synonymous with friendly and forgiving 3D modeling software: we don't sacrifice usability for the sake of functionality. With handy contextual tips, a dedicated Instructor panel for beginners, and mountains of online resources, help is always on the way. And just in case, every SketchUp Pro license includes a year of free technical support.

No software is an island

We built SketchUp Pro to slide right into your existing workflow. Ready for some alphabet soup? With importers for DXF, DWG, 3DS, DAE, KMZ, TIF, JPG, PNG and a few more, you can bring in drawings, models and images to your heart's content. SketchUp Pro also exports all of those formats, plus PDF, OBJ, FBX, XSI, VRML, MP4, WEBM and AVI. OMG.

Slides are boring. Present from SketchUp Pro

Scenes let you save views of your model to pull up anytime. Styles provide endless visual effects to make your work look precise, sketchy or anything in between. Section Planes slice through models for creating sectional views. Go fullscreen, walk around, add labels and export flyover animations. Present from SketchUp Pro and get your point across every single time.

Models and plugins aplenty

Need a particular chair for the room you're designing? A lamp for your carriage house? A rhino for your zoo? You'll find almost anything you need in SketchUp's 3D Warehouse, the world's biggest repository of free 3D models. And as for plugins that provide extra features and tools, our all-new Extension Warehouse is your ticket to add-on nirvana.

Don't just design. Analyze

SketchUp Pro can accurately predict where shadows will fall, given any time, date and location on earth. It can show you exactly what you'll see from anywhere in your model. It will precisely calculate the area of any surface or material, or the volume of any enclosed 3D shape. It lets you add attributes to objects, and can spit out lists and reports with deliciously useful data.

A world of context literally

In about two minutes, you can choose a section of the world to bring into your SketchUp Pro model up to a square kilometer at a time. For free, you'll get aerial imagery, a 3D terrain model and lat-long data to produce accurate shadow studies. From there, you can import pre-modeled buildings for site context and use Google Maps Street View imagery to model anything else you need.

A place for everything and everything in its place

Your mother always told you that the key to 3D modeling success was tidiness and organization. Make your models easy to work on and easy to present. Use groups and components to divvy up your geometry into logical chunks. Layers come in handy for separating big pieces of your model, and the Outliner is a way to see everything at once.

Additional Notes

SketchUp 2017 - Compatibility Changes

With the release of SketchUp 2017, we've removed support for 32-bit operating systems, OpenGL 2.0, and software rendering of models (as opposed to hardware acceleration).

High DPI Support

SketchUp is DPI aware and can adjust the sizes of Icons so they are sized correctly for High DPI screens. Icons are sized when SketchUp starts up. If you adjust your DPI or scaling (Microsoft Windows – but only up to 150%) you will need to restart SketchUp to see correctly sized Icons. Note that SketchUp does not yet scale elements in the drawing window which may result in very small elements on very large screens.

Multiple Processors

Note: SketchUp will run on multiple-processor machines; however, SketchUp will only use one processor. SketchUp doesn't support hyper-threading or multi-threading at this time.
